Planned Giving

Leaving a gift to the Houston Museum of Decorative Arts in your will is a meaningful way to ensure that future generations can experience and appreciate the beauty, history, and craftsmanship of decorative arts. With a simple bequest, you can help preserve our collection, support educational programs, and sustain the museum’s mission for years to come.

You can choose to leave a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or a particular asset. Your generosity will create a lasting legacy while also offering potential tax benefits for your estate.

Designating the Houston Museum of Decorative Arts as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy is a simple yet powerful way to support the museum’s future—often without affecting your current financial situation.

You can name the Museum as:

- A primary beneficiary for all or a portion of the policy

- A contingent beneficiary, receiving the benefit only if your primary beneficiaries are no longer living

- The owner of a paid-up policy, which allows you to receive an immediate charitable deduction

This type of planned gift can allow you to make a larger impact than you may have thought possible during your lifetime, helping preserve our historic collection and support public programming for generations to come.

One of the most tax-efficient ways to make a legacy gift is by naming the Houston Museum of Decorative Arts as a beneficiary of your retirement plan.

Assets in traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, and other retirement accounts may be subject to income and estate taxes when passed to heirs. However, if directed to a nonprofit like the Museum, these funds can be transferred tax-free, maximizing your impact.

You can designate the Museum as:

- A full or partial beneficiary of your retirement account

- A contingent beneficiary, receiving the remainder only if other beneficiaries are no longer living

- Making this kind of gift is usually as simple as filling out a beneficiary designation form with your plan administrator—no need to revise your will.

Your support will help protect and promote the rich decorative arts heritage housed within our historic walls for generations to come.
